We had heavy rains on 20 and 21 November. Here in Palmira we had over 4 inches on the 20th and then nearly 5.5 inches within 3 hours on 21 November. There was significant flash flooding around the Boquete District. Lots of water in a very short time span. Some roads were closed. The creek bordering the east side of our property raged and washed our portions of our creek trail. We had to rebuild portions of the trail. All is now basically back to normal.

We are several days into December and we have registered nearly an inch of rain here in Palmira. Normally, December is a low rainfall month as we transition from the rainy season into the dry season. Only time will tell how it will fall out this month. The winds will usually start kicking up. With this more electricity outages increase. So we have to be prepared for wind and darkness.

The latest ENSO Cycle Report is saying that "El Niño will likely peak during the Northern Hemisphere winter 2015-16, with a transition to ENSO-neutral anticipated during the late spring or early summer."

The IRI (International Research Institute for Climate and Society) (select South America from the Region menu) is reporting the precipitation predictions for December-January-Februray of 2016. Note that they are strongly predicting Below Normal precipitation for areas around Panama for these months. This suggests that we will probably have a very dry dry season.

December 2015

ETESA's, hydrology and meteorology section is predicting a strong probability that the Chiriqui area will have below normal precipitation during the month of December 2015. You can read their report and check out the details for December in the documents section at this link.

Bird activity is increasing as we move into the dry season. We have seen a variety of birds on our coffee finca during recents weeks. Here is a link to some photos of 20 species recently seen. They are familiar visitors that make us smile. They help take our minds off of the ugly things that are going on in various parts of the world. Fortunately our minds can only focus on one thing at a time.

Be prepared for some possible rain in December, but mostly be prepared for winds and dry. Keep the umbrella handy but buttoned down.
