Thanks again to all the volunteer rain fall data collectors.  We really appreciate it and it is helping us to better understand micro rain climates in the Boquete District.

The monthly rainfall at our Palmira Arriba place of 21.31 inches was within normal ranges compared to October totals for the last 11 years.  The mean for October for 11 years has been 27.60 inches with a Standard Deviation of 9.77 inches.  The range has been between a low of 15.27 inches and a high of 45.02 inches.  You can look at the monthly details over the last 11 years at this link.  Our 21.31 inches for October is less than a standard deviation below the mean.

The highest rainfall for the month was at Brisas Boquetenas with 21.40 inches as reported by Austin Perry.  The lowest reported rainfall for the month of October was in Cerro Verde with 8.21 inches reported by Charlotte Lintz.

The latest ENSO Cycle Report is now saying that "El Niño is favored to form in the next couple of months and continue through the Northern Hemisphere winter 2018-19 (70-75% chance)."

If you want to learn more about El Niño, this is a link to a web site to better understand the phenomenon and its effects on our climate and weather.

The IRI (International Research Institute for Climate and Society) (select South America from the Region menu) is reporting the following precipitation predictions for November-December-January of 2018-2019. Note a probability prediction of below normal precipitation for most of Panama (brown).

November 2018

ETESA's, hydrology and meteorology section is predicting that Chiriqui will have a mix of levels of precipitation in November of 2018 ranging from normal to below normal. You can read their report and check out the details for November 2018 in the "documents" section at this link.

October didn't disappoint. We had sufficient rain for the month.  We took off and went on a trip to Europe with a Viking River Cruise. We visited parts of France, Central Germany and the Czech Republic.  Because the areas we visited had been experiencing a significant drought for over 5 months, the Moselle and Rhine rivers were so low that our ship could not navigate parts of the normal cruise.  We spent more time in a land cruiser (bus) than planned but did get some river cruising time. Some light rains started the last couple of days of our trip.  To tell you the truth, I didn't miss the rain here or there.  We dried out and had a good journey seeing many things that we had never before experienced.  Although we saw many impressive Castles along the Rhine, we are glad to be back in our own humble castle in Paradise.

We wisely, left our umbrellas here when we left for Europe.  We didn't miss them, but we are glad they were awaiting us when we got back to drizzly Paradise!  It is looking like November may be a wet one.
